2014 Mazda RX-8 - New and Future Cars 02/06/2012

We have confirmation from various sources in Japan that Mazda is indeed working on the next-generation rotary engine dubbed the 16X.

While things have been fairly quiet lately regarding Mazda's rotary-powered sports car, the RX-8, we have confirmation from various sources in Japan that Mazda is indeed working on the next-generation rotary engine dubbed the 16X. There are reports that Mazda's rotary engine development team has grown from 30 members to 60 in the last year, meaning that the Hiroshima-based company is quite serious about a new Wankel. The 16X will be much more fuel-efficient than the current Renesis rotary engine, and will probably be named the SKY-R, part of the company's new generation of lean-burning engines called the SKY Series.

The SKY-R will most likely have displacement increased by about 300 cc from the current 1.3-liter 2-rotor Wankel. Insiders say that squeezing 300 bhp from the new engine would be a breeze, but Mazda is making fuel economy a high priority so you can expect output south of that figure. Also, we heard that the engine will feature some form of assist, though we're not certain exactly what that will be. It may be an electric motor, making the next RX-8 a mild hybrid car.

The styling of this next-generation rotary sports car will be based on the Shinari concept vehicle that was shown last summer in Italy. Therefore, the production version will look more upscale than the current RX-8, prompting rumors that Mazda is thinking of calling it the RX-9 to differentiate it from the current car, which hasn't proved very popular. Expect Mazda's flagship sports car to make its debut sometime in 2014.

New Mazda MX-5

Pictures of next-generation Mazda MX-5 roadster, which will be lighter than the original

18th January 2012

Mazda is hard at work on a new MX-5 that's set to capture the spirit of the original eighties model, thanks to a huge reduction in weight and a pure and simple driving experience.

Key to the next-generation MX-5 is the firm's SKYACTIV technologies that focus on reducing weight and improving efficiency. While the current car weighs around 1,050kg, Mazda engineers are reportedly on track for a kerbweight of under 900kg.

Mazda has said that it hopes the body alone will account for a 10 per cent weight loss, despite the fact it is about 30 per cent stiffer than the current car, thanks to the use of more high-strength steel.

The chassis itself will also be 10 per cent lighter than the current car's, with redesigned suspension and steering hoping to offer a lightness and agility at low speeds but a more secure feeling at high speeds.

With a new lighter car will come a range of smaller capacity engines. Currently the MX-5 is powered by 1.8-litre and 2.0-litre naturally aspirated engines producing up to 170bhp. The new car is expected to use a turbocharged 1.3-litre SKYACTIV engine, although a naturally-aspirated 1.5-litre unit will also be offered.

The MX-5's new look is inspired by the Takeri concept that debuted at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show. The new design language incorporates a larger shield grille and defined creases in the bodywork.

Expect the next-generation Mazda MX-5 to be unveiled towards the end of 2013, with sales starting the following year.

gas pump imageOverall U.S. gasoline demand fell to a 10-year low in August, according to the American Petroleum Institute (API). Also, year-to-date demand is two percent lower the same period last year.

"The U.S. economy is still struggling. Retail sales are weak, and we're seeing a reflection of that in the gasoline demand numbers," said API chief economist, John Felmy. "The rise in distillate demand accords with data that suggest modest growth in manufacturing, but consumers remain cautious." [click to continue?]

Splurging on AWD won't hurt you much either, as the four-cylinder Tribute I with AWD is just $1103.29 per year on average and ranks third. Interestingly enough, the top 20 least-expensive vehicles to insure are all vans and SUVs.

Naturally, the Tribute also earns the distinction of being the least-expensive SUV to insure as well as the least-expensive vehicle to insure overall.
